Subject:  Statistics - w/  Dr.Spencer Baker - Homework Assignment #3, Ch 9 - Problem 10, page241.

Date: March 20, 2004

Question:
In order to determine if the color of a room had an effect on the level of physical and verbal aggression of pre-school-aged children (2-5) in the United States, a researcher randomly assigned preschool-aged children to either a room painted red or a room painted blue.  Children were videotaped during 20-minute play sessions.  Measures of physical and verbal aggression were then recorded for each child from the videotapes.

a.    What is the sampling population for this research study?

Answer:

All kids aged 2-5 enrolled in pre-school in the United States = the sampling population.

Question:
b.    What are the treatment populations, if any, for this study?

Answer:

There are two treatment populations:

(1)  All kids aged 2-5 enrolled in pre-school in the United States in a RED painted playroom.

(2) All kids aged 2-5 enrolled in pre-school in the United States in a BLUE painted playroom.

Question:
c.     What is the accessible population for this research study?

Answer:

The accessible population is:

All kids aged 2-5 enrolled in pre-school.

Question:

d.    What is the target population for this study?

Answer:

The target population is:

All kids aged 2-5 in the United States.

Question:

e.    What type of research study is the study described above (i.e., what type of inference can be made?)?

Answer:

This study is a controlled experiment.

The researcher controls the color of the rooms.
The researcher assigns kids aged 2-5 randomly to either the red or blue rooms.

This design allows the researcher to describe the behavior of kids from 2-5 years of age who play in these respectively painted rooms and to generalize that behavior to the population of kids from 2-5 years of age throughout the United States.
