Are there questions or unfinished business from the previous module - Module 3, Part 1 that deal with Chapter 3, "Problem Solving and Creativity?"

 5.  - page 70 -
Using small groups, complete the exercise called "Using the Problem-Solving Process."

Using the Problem-Solving Process  (adapted from Dubrin)

Imagine you have received $2 million in cash with the gift taxes already paid.  The only stipulation is that you will have to use the money through either a business or a charitable foundation to raise $15 million within 25 years.  Surplus amounts in excess of $15 million may be distributed amongst the participants as they accrue.  Shortages (failure to reach $15 million in the time allotted must be repaid by the participants or their heirs at the 25 year point.  Solve this problem using the worksheet provided below.  Describe what thoughts you have or what actions you will take for each step of problem and decision making.

I. Identify causes of the problem.

Have you found your own problem or was it given to you?

II. Diagnose the problem.

What is the true decision you are facing?

What is your underlying problem?

III. Find creative alternatives.

Think of the many alternatives facing you.

Let your imagination flow and be creative.

IV. Weigh alternatives.

Weigh the pros and cons of each of your sensible alternatives.

  Alternatives Advantages Disadvantages
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
V. Make the choice.

Based on your analysis in Step IV, choose the best alternative.

VI. Implement the choice.

Outline your action plan for converting your chosen alternative into action.

VII. Evaluate the choice.

Do the best you can here by speculating how you will know if the decision you reached was a good one.

Using the idea quota and a handout from your instructor, work by yourself to rank order the list of items for successful rescue from the moon.  Behind each item you rank, write down two ideas or logical reasons for placing the item in that position on your list.

This exercise was borrowed from "Psychology Today" for use in leadership schools, and has been modified by your instructor for your use.

NASA Moon Rescue Exercise (Part I - Individual Effort)

You may be given a two-sided handout by the instructor.

Listen to the instructions being read by the instructor.

Any further questions must be asked only of the instructor and not from other students.

Working by yourself, prioritize the items needed for the rescue, with 1 being most-important and 15 being least important.

Save the remainder of the exercise for completion in the near future.  Results will not be examined until after the completion of the second portion of the exercise during a subsequent lesson.

NASA Exercise  Individual Worksheet

Instructions to be read by the instructor:

"You are member of a space crew originally scheduled to rendezvous with a mother ship on the lighted surface of the moon.  Due to mechanical difficulties, however, your ship was forced to land at a spot some 200 miles from the rendezvous point.  During landing, much of the equipment aboard was damaged; and, since survival depends on reaching the mother ship, the most critical items available must be chosen for the 200-mile trip. Below are listed the 15 items left intact and undamaged after landing.  Your task is to rank order them in terms of their importance to your crew in allowing them to reach the rendezvous point.

On the black line in the green spaces below, place the number 1 by the most important item, the number 2 by the second most important, and so on, through number 15, the least important.  Work this portion of the exercise alone.  Ask no questions of anyone other than the instructor.  Write down one or possibly two logical ideas about why you ranked the item the way you did in the green space provided.  You have no more than 15 minutes to complete this phase of the exercise."
