1. REQUIREMENT
In the syllabus, Part VIII, Evaluation, you can see that Part III of the course has a requirement for you to create a Family Tree, worth 100 points of the 1000 points in the course.
Specifically, the syllabus says, "Create your own family tree, and embellish it with stories about its members that emphasize learned or cultural aspects of your heritage and share your findings with the class.
Alternatively, you may choose to examine the family tree of a famous immigrant family in America, and share your findings with the class."
2. RATIONALE
The requirement to create a Family Tree enables you to meet
Course Objective C in the syllabus, which says that students shall
"Contrast cultures inherited in their own family,
and country with other societal views of human behavior."
3. METHODS
Use the half-dozen or more genealogy sites mentioned in Related Links to help you. Sometimes one's family bible contains birth, death, and marriage announcements that may help you. Interviews with relatives are suggested. Our reference librarians may be able to assist you. Some evidence may be contained in matters of public record filed in county courthouses.
4. CRITERIA
Your family tree should meet the following guidelines:
(i.) Create a posterboard, or a website, or a PowerPoint slide, or a means of
displaying your family tree to the class.
(ii.) Use either aural and written means to share one or two stories with the
class, concerning one or two family members or family episodes, which you feel
contain significant cultural information. (A taped story told by another family
member, or a story you yourself tell the class can meet part of this
requirement.)
(iii.) Limit written documentation meeting this requirement to no more than three
typed pages, and present it to the instructor near the end of the term.
5. DUE DATE
Your family tree is due on Days 1 and 2, five weeks after your country report due date as specified in the following table:
|
If your Country Report was due on Day 1 of this week...
Week 5 |
then your Family Tree requirement is due on Days 1 and 2 of this
week. (Use last names arranged from A to Z to determine the order of
individual presentations.) Week 10 |
| Week 6 | Week 11 |
| Week 7 | Week 12 |
| Week 8 | Week 13 |
| Week 9 | Week 14 |
