Review - Group Thoughts

1.  Our study of Africa involved its geography, its Islamic and Christian influences, and the Western influences it inherited by being a colony of several European nations. As colonial people with a close affinity to nature, Africans bear resentment towards a European culture which places profit in a more prominent position of importance than man's relationship to the surrounding animals and elements of the land.

2. In one of the countries we have studied there is a gesture that means "The gift you may give me (for carrying your bags) will mean so much that I must hold it in two hands."   What is that country?

Class/Internet Activities

1. Listen and respond to the Asian Country Team Report.
2. Watch The Mosque.  Then continue The Story of Islam.
3. Optional Activity:  Try memorizing the names of the capitol cities in the Asian countries listed below.  How many can you recall?

1.  Listen to and then respond to the Asian Country Report.  Point out those man-made objective elements of culture you have seen, and also those man-made ideas or institutions by which Asian people characterize themselves.

2.  Answer the following questions on the basis of the videos.

A.  What practices and behaviors do you need to know about in order to enter a mosque today, without giving offence?

B.  The desert and the nomadic life had harsh consequences for those who did not adhere to its cultural necessities.  Explain the influence that these geographic elements seem to have on the origin and expansion of Islam.  List the important principles of Islam.  Note the parallels and the disjuncture with Christianity.  Discuss the differences between the Koran and the Bible.  Would you regard Islamic fundamentalists who preach Jihad as freedom fighters, terrorists, or simply Islamic radicals today?

3. See how many of the Asian country capitol cities are already on the tip of your tongue.  Then, after three minutes, see how many more you can learn and retain.

Summary

1.  We recognize our common ancestry with Europe, and the Declaration of Independence with which we went to war to sever that relationship and to secure the freedoms to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
2.  We begin to sense that our Asian and African neighbors have had equally turbulent times in severing the colonial bonds to European countries during the 20th century.  Islam is not as old as Christianity, but it has spread from its desert origins across Africa, and across India, China, and Indonesia.  You can attend a mosque in Washington, D.C. or in Paris, France.  There are commonalities and differences between the Christian Bible and the Islamic Koran.
3.  By reading from Margaret Meade we will begin to discover the patterns within the American family that make us who we are.

Homework

1.  Read Chapter Eighteen "Female Initiation Rites" pages 94-98 in Cross-Cultural Perspectives in America.  Answer the following questions in your notebook:

 1.  Why might role confusion exist for adolescent females in some non-industrialized societies?
 2. Would Brescia's list of psychological tasks be equally appropriate for adolescents in Third World countries?

2.  Read Chapter IV "The Class Handicap " pages 34-43 in And Keep Your Powder Dry.  Answer the following questions in your notebook:

3. Describe the middle and lower class in Europe, according to Meade.  (page 34-35)
4. Is class thinking dominant in the old communities along our Eastern seaboard?  (page 36)
5. Describe the relative status afforded members of the Episcopal, Baptist, and Methodist churches in parts of Eastern America. (page 39)
6. How is it that America is regarded by Meade as similar to a society of fish?  (page 40)
7. Has America made it a condition of success that each man should reach a position higher than that of his father's?  (page 43)

Has Your Travel Agent Told You?

A woman called and asked, "Do airlines put your physical description on your bag so they know who's luggage belongs to who?" I said, "No, why do you ask?" She replied, "Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said FAT, and I'm overweight. Is there any connection?" After putting her on hold for a minute while I "looked into it" ( I was actually laughing) I came back and explained the city code for Fresno, California is FAT, and that the airline was just putting a destination tag on her luggage.
