Video Excerpts

Module 1: Lesson Plan 1 - The Meaning of Culture, (and the reading of the Syllabus)

South Pacific - 1hr 57 min through 2:15:30
(This video should be watched as soon as the syllabus has been read.  The video gives a good illustration of the difference between what "Nellie-the-nurse" regards as biological behavior and what her "Cultured Frenchman regards as learned behavior.)

Nurses are needed in wartime - to cheer up the men.
Songs -
Nellie sings "Broad where a broad should be broad"
Both Lt Cable and Nellie are troubled by being in new circumstances - both are in love and neither is willing to marry.
The French planter confronts Nellie and she refuses on the racial basis that he was married to a Polynesian woman.
She claims "I was born that way!"  He says he doesn't believe that.
Cable sings "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught."
The Frenchman sings "This Nearly Was Mine."

Module 1: Lesson Plan 2 - Meet Margaret Mead and Ruth Benedict

Psychological Anthropology - the first 13 minutes
This video introduces students to Margaret Mead, to Ruth Benedict, and to Roger Edgarton.  Roger Edgarton lists three characteristics of a sick society.

Apollo 13 - 1:07 through 1:22
The need for small group solutions is clearly evident as Apollo 13 is sent around the far side of the moon.  An eventual buildup of carbon monoxide is only one of many serious problems.  The solution to the carbon monoxide problem is presented later.  This video sets the stage for students to complete their individual solution to the NASA problem-solving exercise presented in class.

Module 2: Lesson Plan 1 - Alaskan Eskimos

Apollo 13 - 1:28 through 1:34
The solution to the carbon monoxide problem is presentedThis video excerpt should be watched after students have completed their group solution to the NASA problem-solving exercise.

The Making of the Human Heart - 00:00 through 14:00 minutes
Ice, snow, and stars are replaced by the introduction to Holy Boy, and Eskimo in 1965.  There is a flashback to the landing of a helicopter with a British officer on board before World War II.  You meet Holy Boy's grandmother who is dancing near his first seal kill.  The officer, Walter, confronts the grandmother with the need to take Holy Boy to another culture because Holy Boy has a "white man's disease."

Module 2: Lesson Plan 2

The Native Americans - 19 minutes through 38 minutes
American Indians went through their own tribal warfares and produced a kind of confederacy in the Northeast which eliminated continuous warfare.  Colonial peoples from Europe (French, English and Spanish) brought thoroughly different cultural procedures to America.  For example, if land was not possessed by Christians, it was regarded as uninhabited and could be claimed.  Property rights were not something understood by American Indians.  Nature was a mother nature to Indians, and she could not be bought and sold.  Colonial peoples displaced native Indians, sometimes forcing them off their land.  Colonial peoples sometimes seized the children of Indians and re-educated them so that they would have European values.
