Instructor - Mary Swart - RCTC - Spring 2002
SPCH 1130 - Interpersonal Communication
Group Feature Film Project Assignment - 100 points

On [date], your project group will be responsible for 30-40 minutes of classroom instruction. Your assignment is to use a feature film to illustrate Interpersonal Communication Concepts, provide discussion, a brief classroom activity, and written analysis paper. The purpose of this project is to test your ability to apply principles of interpersonal communication with simulated real?life examples. Here are guidelines for preparation, presentation, and evaluation:

Preparation:
o Choose a movie from the following list:
Almost Famous, The American President, At First Sight, Before Sunrise, Clueless, Dangerous Minds,
Dead Man Walking, The Doctor, The Election, Finding Forrester, Grease, Gung Ho, He Said, She Said,
Jerry McGuire, Joy Luck Club, Liar Liar, My Family My Life, 0 Brother, Where Art Thou?, Office Space, One True Thing, Ordinary People, Philadelphia, Pretty Woman, Reality Bites, Remains of the Day, The Story of Us, The Truth About Cats and Dogs, When a Man Loves a Woman, White Man's Burden, Being There, Betrayal, Boyz N the Hood Breakfast Club, Breaking Away, Children of a Lesser God, Dead Man Walking, Dead Poets Society, Diner, The Doctor, Erin Brockovich, Mr. Holland's Opus, Say Anything, Steel Magnolias, Story of Us, Tootsie, Twelve Angry Men, When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail

o View the movie. Do this as a group at the time/location of your choice. Take notes, discuss concepts, and develop
instructional strategies.

o Announce the movie. Tell the class as soon as you have made your selection. This announcement, which must be made in class no later than APRIL 10TH , will reserve the movie for your group (only one group per movie). No changes are allowed after this announcement.

Presentation:
o Describe the movie. Briefly provide the class with some basic plot/character descriptions to orient them to the film.

o Show clips from the movie. Carefully select and show scenes from the film that allows you to illustrate and discuss
interpersonal communication concepts. Offer the class a post-viewing analysis of clips or scenes. Guide the class to focus on particular communication concepts. Pose questions in advance of the screening and or pause the scene at critical points. A VCR/monitor and an overhead projector will be available in the classroom. All other arrangements (getting the video, taping/cueing the clips, etc.) are the responsibility of the presenting group. (I can provide some assistance if needed.)

o Analyze the movie. This is the crucial portion of your presentation and should involve the bulk of your time. I will leave this
portion to your creativity and imagination. Lecture, discussion, skits, the choice is yours, as long your focus is instruction
about interpersonal communication. I expect you to weave in concepts/terms from the course, and textbook. Be careful to provide specific examples from the movie for each principle you discuss AND to provide analysis linking your examples to the principles. Handouts of concepts being analyzed for the class and/or visual aid is required (I will make copies for you). Decisions regarding "who does what" are up to your group. All members are not required to speak during the presentation; all are required, however, to contribute to the project.

Written Portion of Project:
1.A cover page with your group's names
2.A 5?7 typed, double-spaced analysis of your movie including a list of concepts being used from our text and textbook definition.
3. A copy of the Project Evaluation Form, as the LAST page.
4. A groupwork evaluation form from each group member is mandatory.

Evaluation:
While I do not expect you to use every concept from our course, I do expect you to use as many as possible. Your project will be evaluated by me and by your classmates (via confidential evaluation forms). While my assessment of your work will be the primary determinant of your project score, I will use your classmates' evaluations to assist my assessment. Your project score will be the grade each group member receives unless there is a documented descrepancy of member(s) involvement and contribution. This will be made evident to me in the form of private/individual group experience evaluations. EACH OF YOU PRIVATELY FILL OUT THE GROUPWORK EVALUATION FORM FOUND IN THIS PACKET AND HAND IN THE DAY OF YOUR PROJECT PRESENTATION.
