English 0910 A

In this course, students will learn basic sentence components including subject/verb identification and agreement, run-on sentences, fragments, correct verb form, correct pronoun usage, proper punctuation and capitalization, and parallel structure. This course provides a grammar review for those desiring a refresher course. In addition, students scoring between 13-24 on the ASAP test, must simultaneously enroll in the writing course, English 0940. (Prerequisites: 13 on ASAP test). (2 C/2 lect, 0 lab). English 0980 A

In this course, students will learn to write single paragraph and multi-paragraph essays, based on ideas gleaned from out-of-class readings and in-class discussions. The goal of this course is to provide students with the literacy skills needed to succeed in college-level courses. Students whose ASAP scores range between 13-24 should enroll in English 0980 and in English 0910. (Prerequisites: none). (3 Credits). Download Course Outline

English 117

English 1117 and 1118 constitute RCTC's college composition sequence. The overall goal of the sequence is to provide students with essential college-level communication and critical thinking skills.  Both courses encourage students to support their ideas with convincing evidence and to challenge yet respect the ideas of others.  The two-course sequence focuses on learning to communicate in both oral and written discourse not only in college classes, but in the world beyond college as well.

English 1117 introduces the students to various writing strategies for both single- and multiple-source essays.  By critically reading and responding, students will practice expository, analytical, and persuasive modes of communication to develop critical thinking and writing skills, culminating in limited research projects. English 1118 concludes the emphasis on writing from multiple sources and developing critical thinking skills begun in English 1117.  Students will examine external resources, develop additional critical thinking skills, and analyze and synthesize literary texts.  Students will also demonstrate their ability to support interpretations of primary texts by combining documented and textual evidence in a major research project. Philosophy 1114

The course will survey some of the most important problems, issues, and questions in the history of philosophy, sampling writings from such areas as epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of religion, philosophy of self, logic, aesthetics, existentialism, and phenomenology. Download Course Outline
