COURSE DESCRIPTION: The first college level algebra course. Topics include but are not limited to: Polynomial, Rational, Radical, Exponential, and Logarithmic functions and their inverses. Solving and graphing higher order equations, optimization applications, methods of solving systems of equations and conic sections.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Math 0099 (Intermediate Algebra) with an A or B preferred or appropriate ASAP score.
TEXT: College Algebra, Mark Dugopolski, fourth edition.
CALCULATORS: are expected for use daily in class and are allowed for use on tests with the exception of QWERTY calculators. QWERTY calculators are symbolic manipulator calculators and may not be used on any exam for this class. Most graphing calculators are acceptable with the TI83 preferred. Cell phones are not acceptable as calculators.
ATTENDANCE &CLASS POLICIES: Attendance and participation are necessary for success in this course. Students are responsible for all information given in class. Group work done in class may not be made-up. Attendance is the prerogative of the student, but it is expected that anyone with more than 4 absences will withdraw from class. As a courtesy to the other students: children are not allowed in class, cell phones and beepers should be silent during class.
HOMEWORK: Problems at the end of each section will be suggested. They will not be collected, but it is strongly recommended that they be done each day.
QUIZZES: A “cooperative quiz” will be given before each test for review. This is done in groups in the classroom and the scores are extra credit on that chapter’s test. These quizzes are optional. You do not need to participate, however you must take part to earn these points. If you are not in class you cannot “make-up” a cooperative quiz or take it early. It is a group effort.
TESTS: One test every one or two chapters (see calendar). One final exam from chapters 1–7
The testing policy is as follows:
- A test may be taken early with no deduction of points.
- A missed test can be made-up during the final week of the semester and
will have 10% of the total points deducted. The final week of the semester you can take at most two missed tests.
- If a third test is missed the scores will begin zeroing out starting with the earliest
missed test.
d) Make-up tests at the end of the semester will only be given to students with
75% attendance.
- Anyone cheating on a test will receive a zero. This includes both copying answers and supplying them to someone else.
- There are no individual retakes on tests.
Note: The calendar is subject to changes. It is your responsibility to be informed of any changes. Attend class!!!
