Ethics Unit

To prepare:
Read the handout on "Universal Values" at http://www.roch.edu/faculty/lhalverson/universal_values.htm
Read Assigned Chapters from Gang of One (your teacher will specify - but really any chapter of your choice will work!)

Respond:
1. How would you distinguish between "ethical" and "legal?"

2. How did Fan Shen face ethical challenges in his life? List 5 that you read about.

3. Looking over the Universal Values Handout, how did Fan Shen find these values, at times, in tension? For example, he was asked to "conform" to his family and the Party's ideology yet needed to personally find "self-direction" in his life.

4. When Fan Shen falsifies his stool samples, he lies. When he is involved in the Red Guards, he steals books. Is "lying" or "stealing" ever justified? If falsifying data ever "for the best?"

5. What moral dilemmas might there be in the field your are studying for this class?

6. What moral dilemmas have you personally faced?
