Searching in    image of computers   MnPALS for

library materials. 

 Use MnPALS to locate books, government documents, videos, CDs, DVDs, electronic books, and numerous other kinds of information in Goddard Library. From the home page (http://www.roch.edu/library), select Library Catalog, then select Books.

 SEARCHING BY KEYWORD

1. The Keyword Search is a good place to start.

2. Highlight the desired search method (Anywhere, Title, Author)

3. Click in the Search For: text box and type in a word or phrase to search.

SEARCHING BY BROWSE

  1. Use Browse an Alphabetical List if you know exactly how a title starts or the author’s last name and at least first initial. Click Go and wait for results.

2.  To start a new search or return to a previous search: Click Basic Search at any time to begin a new search. Click Current Searches to see previous searches in the current session. Click to select the search you want to return to, and then click View.

DISPLAYING SEARCH RESULTS

1. Results List will display in order by Year (beginning with most recent). To display results by Author (by last name) or Title (in alphabetical order) click on the desired column heading.

2. To display an item record on the Results List, click on the title or item number to see the full record. Search terms often appear in bold.

3. Location/Available informs you of the items location and if an item is checked out or on the shelves. From the individual record, click the link next to Location/ Available. Or, from the Results List, click Library (Owned/Out) for the availability of the desired record. Check date under Due Date to see if item is checked out or on the shelf.

TO REVISE (LIMIT) SEARCH RESULTS

  1. If your search yields too many or too few results, revise or limit your search. From the options just above the Results List, click Revise.

2.. At next screen, select the desired Boolean operator (that narrows or broadens the search results).
3. Use Anywhere in Record to add another search term to narrow or broaden the search.

4. Click Go and wait for revised search results.

Mail:

1. From the Results List, click the selection box for any items you wish to email to yourself.

2. Click Save/Mail and follow directions to complete the form.

3. Select Citation for the bibliographic information (author, title, publisher, date, place of publication, call number). For

more information, including subject headings and pages, select Opac.

4. To email, include your email address and click Go.

5. Your email message will arrive from aleph@harp.msus.edu with the subject you supply.

Save:

1. On the Results List, click the selection box for any items you wish to save to a disk. Follow steps 2-3 above.

2. Leave the email text box blank, click Go, and then choose Save Selected.

3. When file opens on screen, under File on the browser menu bar select Save As, and choose the location and format

for the file.

TO CHECK YOUR LIBRARY ACCOUNT

1. From the options on the top blue bar, click Your Borrowing Record. Login using your User ID/Barcode (14-digit

barcode number on back of your campus ID) and Password (last name unless changed).

2. By clicking through several screens, you can view loaned items, loan history, renew items and delete requests
