Enabling TCP/IP Remote Access Services in Windows95/98

Enabling TCP/IP Remote Access Services in Windows95/98

SUMMARY

This article describes how to configure Windows 95, 98, 98 special edition, Dial-Up Networking (DUN) to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). NOTE: The procedure in this article assumes you have a web account with UCR or some other ISP. Your ISP provides the PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol, a method of connecting a computer to the internet) protocol for dial-up connections.

Make sure that you have installed Dial-Up Networking, which comes bundled with Windows95 and normally appears as a folder in the My Computer window. Use your distribution media to install Dial-Up Networking if needed.

Open the Dial-Up Networking folder and click-on the Make New Connection icon

Follow the instructions in the Wizard that opens - Create a name for the connection (UCR Remote Access); the phone number is 529-2760 (no area code is needed if you’re calling locally); select your modem or let Windows95 attempt to configure it. Click Finish.

Open the Control Panel (Start >Settings > Control Panel) and click-on the Network icon

You should see (minimally) the Dial-In Adapter and the TCP/IP protocol in the Installed Components window. If the TCP/IP protocol is not installed, click the Add button.

Select Protocol and click add.

Select Microsoft from the vendor list. Select TCP/IP as the protocol to install. Click OK. If networking was not installed initially, you may need your Windows95 distribution media.

Once installed, the configuration for TCP/IP should appear - if not, open the Network icon in Control Panel, select TCP/IP and click the properties button.

Once in the Properties dialog, select the DNS Configuration tab. Believe it or not, select the Disable DNS button (Enabling DNS requires that you manually enter a computer name, domain and domain servers, which conflict with the actual settings delivered to your machine via the Bootp protocol - these settings are variable until the actual connection is made. DNS will be enabled once you dial in and the connection is established).

Select the IP Address tab and select the Obtain IP address Automatically button. Select the Wins Configuration tab and select the Disable WINS resolution button. Do not enter a default gateway under the Gateway tab. The other tabs can be left alone. Select OK to save the configuration.

Reboot your computer.

To create a network connection once your computer has been rebooted, open the "My Computer" icon (located in the upper left-hand corner of the Windows 95 desktop), select the "Dial-Up" folder and then select the entry you just created (UCR Remote Access). Enter your username and password in the fields provided in the dialog box that appears, then click the "connect" button. A small status window should appear that indicates the progress of establishing the connection. Once the connection is made, the status window changes to indicate the time online - this status window must be kept open to remain connected (you can minimize it so that it only appears in the taskbar).

When you want to disconnect, use the "disconnect" button in the status window.

While you have a connection open, you can use any Internet software, like a web browser or compatible e-mail program.
