E-mail is the official means of communication at RCTC?

All students will receive e-mail accounts through the college. Your email address is: <userid>@acad.roch.edu Your e-mail user ID is the same as your student login for the computer labs. The e-mail password is the same as your login password for the computer labs. E-mail can be accessed via the Internet at webmail.roch.edu. If you're not sure what your student login (userid) is, go to eGuide (link opens a new browser window). Do a search by your last name. Select yourself by your first name. The result of the search will show your user ID and email address.

What if you don't know your password? Your initial password is your birth date using the format YYYYMMDD. If that doesn't work try 99999999. If neither of these work try the password reset tool or go to the Technology Support Center with your picture id and request that your password be reset. The Technology Support Center (TSC) is located in Goddard Library GL100.

Please read the following information before using the email system:

• Your e-mail address will be userid@mb.rctc.edu where userid is your current user logon name. For the curious, "mb" stands for "mailbox".
• With Outlook Live you'll receive a mailbox with a 10 GB Capacity (10,000 MBs)!
• When you activate your Outlook Live account, you do not only get a new e-mail account with a HUGE storage capacity, you also get an even larger online file storage system called "SkyDrive" with 25 GBs (25,000 MBs) of file storage! You can use SkyDrive(skydrive.live.com) to store/save your files and access them via the web from anywhere! You can visit http://windowslive.com/online/skydrive OR http://windowslive.uk.msn.com/skydrive/ to learn more about SkyDrive.
• Spam filter is now integrated in your email - no longer need separate website to access.
• If you want to redirect or forward messages that come to your mb.rctc.edu account to another email account (yahoo, g-mail, etc.), simply set up a redirect / forwarding rule in your RCTC account.
• You can get messages from your mb.rctc.edu account in a different e-mail inbox by setting up POP3 in the non-RCTC e-mail account. Your non-RCTC account must offer POP3 for this to work.

IMPORTANT: Outlook Live Email Passwords:

If you change your email password while in Outlook Live, the network and email passwords will no longer match.

To sync your network & email passwords, you can do any of the following:

1. Login on a campus workstation and change your network password.
2. Use the password reset tool
3. Contact HelpDesk to change it for you – leave them email & phone #

Password Requirement Guidelines:

The following rules and restrictions apply to passwords for Outlook Live accounts.

Password rules:

• Passwords cannot contain your first and/or last name.
• Passwords must be a minimum of eight characters in length.
• The password is case-sensitive.
• The password can contain uppercase letters and lowercase letters.
• The password can contain numbers.
• The password can contain the following ASCII text characters:
  ` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ * ( ) _ + - = { } | [ ] \ : " ; ' > ? , . /
• The minimum password length is six characters.
• The maximum password length is 16 characters.

The password can NOT contain any of the following items:

Password restrictions:

• Spaces
• Non-English characters
• The character &
• The character <
• The account name part of the e-mail address. For example, if the e-mail address is userid@mb.rctc.edu, the password can't contain userid. This restriction isn't case-sensitive. Therefore, USERID or userid can't be used in the password for user@mb.rctc.edu.
• The answer to the Windows Live ID secret question that helps you reset your password if you forget it. For example, if the Windows Live ID secret question is Mother's birthplace, and Seattle is the answer, the password can't contain Seattle. This restriction isn't case-sensitive. Therefore, SEATTLE or seattle can't be used in the password.

If a student or applicant chooses to forward his/her mail to another email address (AOL, Hotmail, Gmail, etc.), the primary campus email address remains the destination for official RCTC correspondence.

All students are responsible for activating their university network ID and their email account. RCTC assigned student email accounts shall be the preferred means of communication with all students attending Rochester Community and Technical College.  Students are responsible for all information sent to them via their officially assigned email account. If a student chooses to forward their RCTC email account, he or she is responsible for all information, including attachments, sent to any other email account.

Students who choose to have their email forwarded to a private email address outside the official RCTC network address will be doing so at their own risk. RCTC is not responsible for any difficulties that may occur in the proper or timely transmission or access of email forwarded to any unofficial email address, and any such problems will not absolve students of their responsibility to know and comply with the content of official communications sent to students' official RCTC email address.
