"Tree At My Window"
(Interactive Music and Video Installation)
-
Commissioned by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council
This is the first exhibit of a series of interactive
installations incorporating original music composition and video projection.
The work was exhibited
at the Rochester Art Center from
November 13, 2004 to January 31, 2005.
"Tree
At My Window" is an interactive installation written especially for the
Rochester
Art
Center’s Davies Printing Audio Visual Room. The piece is centered
on the Robert Frost poem of the same title. The work includes a video
camera, projected images, a computer and software
written in Max/MSP.
The work is intended to explore the relationship
between the viewer/participant and the space itself. As one moves throughout
the space, the video camera transmits motion and color data to the computer
program. Numerous zones in the room trigger pre-determined sound and
video events, including approximately 80 music phrases specifically composed
for the exhibition.
The “instruments” that play the music
phrases are determined by the color of the clothing that
the participant/viewer is wearing when the music phrase is triggered.
Viewer/Participants can control the four stanzas of the poem by activating
them via motion, and control the pitch of the voice by "leaning" toward
and away from the 60' trees in the park (as seen through the glass walls
of the exhibition room).
