Improving Student Learning Through Service Learning and Effective Technology Use


  • WHEN: February 15-16, 2001. Registration begins at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday and the conference will conclude at 3:30 on Friday.

  • COST: Free to all MnSCU Speech Professionals (including registration and meals. Outstate participants (must be at least 50 miles away from the conference site) also will be provided with a double occupancy hotel room. Persons requesting a single room will be charged an additional fee.

  • WHERE: Normandale Community College 9700 France Ave. S. Bloomington, MN

  • PLEASE BRING YOUR FAVORITE VIDEO CLIPS!
    During our "swap-shop" time, we'll again share our teaching resources and bright ideas by presenting those thought provoking, communicatively inept, or generally funny movie clips we use in class to demonstrate communication concepts. Along with the clip, please bring 50 copies of a short, written description of how you use it. If you would like to submit your description to Lori.Halverson@roch.edu prior to the conference, it will be posted on our website!

Thursday, February 15th: 
  • 12:00-1:00 Registration

  • 1:00-1:50 Teaching with Technology Panel--resources and strategies presented by MnSCU speech communication faculty currently using them.
  • 2:00-2:45 Break-out session I: Join one of four groups-Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, Intercultural Communication, or Small Group Communication-to focus on ideas of how to incorporate technology effectively into the course.

  • 3:00-3:45 Breakout session II: Move to another of the four core course groups to explore how to use technology in that course.

  • 4:00-4:30 Reports from Breakout sessions: Our best ideas of how to use technology effectively in our core courses.

  • 4:30-5:30 Exploring Publisher's Resources for Core Communication Courses: Open Resource Tables and Browsing Time

  • 5:30 - 7:00 Dinner

  • 7:30 - 9:00 Lights, Camera…Action! Sharing Teaching Resources: Video Clip Swap-shop
Friday, February 16th
  • 8:00 - 9:00 Registration and Coffee

  • 9:00 - 9:50 Service Learning Panel-assignments and strategies for incorporating service learning into speech communication courses presented by MnSCU faculty.

  • 10:00 - 10:50 Breakout sessions: Choose one of four groups to explore incorporating service learning assignments in core courses- Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, Intercultural Communication, Small Group Communication.

  • 11:00-11:30 Reports from Breakout sessions: Our best ideas of how to incorporate service learning into our core courses.

  • 11:30 - 12:45 Lunch

  • 1:00 - 3:00 Metro Alliance discussions: outstate faculty are invited and encouraged to stay to share curriculum concerns and issues for the future. Some suggested discussion questions from Metro Alliance are:

    • How are our course titles, outlines, goals, and course offerings aligned?

    • What are some general disciplinary/program issues, changes, and planning concerns for our discipline?

    • What is the Metro Alliance, and what does it mean for our discipline?

  • 3:00 - 3:30 Future Directions for SPAM Evaluations Adjourn
