I Have to Give a WHAT????

How to Prepare for A Presentation...General Tips for Students

Purpose: To help you prepare for your public speaking situation.

First: Do you know what is expected of you? Determine what you need to do and what the guidelines are. All communication situations ask, "Who am I, who are you and why are we doing here together?" This can guide your work. Other initial questions to consider include:
1) What is my general purpose? Am I persuading, informing or entertaining?

2) Who is my audience? Do I need to conduct an audience analysis?

3) What specific requirements must I address in my presentation?

Now...what should I do?

1) Brainstorm

2) Analyze your Audience

3) Research your topic

4) Narrow your topic to best meet your audience's need and the assignment

5) Write the body of your speech.
Add order. Stir in your supporting materials (each main point should have a fact/statistic, example/story and piece of testimony). Top with transitions between your main points (statements that help you move from point to point. For example, "Now that we have covered ______________________, let's move on to___________________________.").

6) Have fun with the introduction and conclusion of your speech.

7) Revise, reorder as needed, revise, reorder as needed, revise!

And Now Practice...Really?

Read these tips on anxiety.

Read aloud to yourself as you write.

Work up a manuscript.

Read it through several times until you know it. Time yourself. Are you in the required limit? If not revise!

Now reduce your ideas to key word notes. This is an extemporaneous style. Here you practice concepts not words.

Practice your movements. Watch yourself in the mirror. Videotape yourself. Practice in front of another person. Practice in front of the dog or stuffed animals if you can't get a live audience.
