Scholarship Opportunities

RCTC Presidential Scholarships

RCTC offers a Presidential Scholarship to qualified incoming Minnesota freshmen students. To be eligible for this award, you need to have a cumulative GPA of 3.9 and/or a qualifying graduating class rank of 5%. There is a preference towards students who can demonstrate their leadership skills and involvement in the community. To find out more about the qualifications and to apply, contact Audrey Lidke at 285-7469 or stop in her office in the Counseling Center at SS 140. This scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for incoming freshmen. It not only pays for your first semester at RCTC, but it allows you to use all of your books for free for the entire year! Throughout your freshmen year you are required to do a work study with a mentor, usually in your field of interest. Presidential scholarship work study students are paid $7.00/hour and are allowed to work up to 200 hours in order to earn money for their spring semester at RCTC. Students receiving a 3.3 GPA after their first year at RCTC are eligible to apply for funding for their second year. These scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, so as soon as you are committed to RCTC, please submit your application! Scholarships for Incoming Students

Presidential Scholarship

10 Scholarships (Please use specialized application form)

Amount: 2-year scholarship funding tuition and textbooks at RCTC.
(Second year at RCTC renewable by maintaining 3.300 GPA or higher.) Presidential scholars are also eligible to apply for the Douglass Family Scholarship which provides funds for completion of a bachelor's degree.

Application Deadline:
Return completed applications as soon as you are willing to commit to RCTC. Early applicants will be reviewed and granted. Awarded to Minnesota residents with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) which ranks them in the top five percent (5%) of their graduating class. Preference given to students demonstrating leadership, and community involvement. Applicants must be recommended by their high school superintendent and/or principal and include their high school transcript.


Nick Kehoe Second Chance Memorial Scholarship

1 Scholarship (Please use specialized application form)

Amount: $1,000
This scholarship can be renewed for a second year at RCTC based on completion of 36 credits, including developmental classes if needed, with a 2.0 GPA (Career exploration class suggested if student does not have clear education goal determined.)

Awarded to a Pine Island High School graduate, who has earned at least one varsity athletic letter. Given to a student with financial need and ranked in lower 50% of high school class with willingness to work for a college education at RCTC.


Jimmy Joe McDermott Scholarship

1 Scholarship

Amount: $600
Awarded to a student from a southeastern Minnesota High School who has participated in high school activities or athletics and plans to continue student life or athletic activities at RCTC.


MN Society of Professional Engineers Scholarship

1 Scholarship

Amount: $600
Awarded to student enrolling in Engineering Technology or Pre-Engineering.


RCTC Foundation Scholarship

Number Varies

Amount: $400
Awarded to students with a GPA of 3.0 or above. Available to any field of study.


Champa/Kereakos Scholarship

2 Scholarships

Amount: $300
Awarded to high school graduate who participated in high school athletics or fine arts. Preference will be given to students who plan to participate in some form of student life activity at RCTC.


Norma Wolfe Scholarship

1 Scholarship

Amount: $250
Awarded to freshman nursing student.


Regional Endowment Scholarship

2 Scholarships

Amount: $250
Awarded to entering freshmen from Minnesota High Schools that have participated in the Regional Endowment Program.


Rochester Women's Softball Association Scholarship

2 Scholarships

Amount: $200
Awarded to freshman whose GPA is 3.0 or higher. The recipient must have participated in high school softball for at least two years and plans to continue in student life or athletics activities at RCTC.


Associated General Contractors of Minnesota and the Diversity Council

2 Scholarships

Amount: Tuition/Books/Supplies
Awarded to person of color entering the Carpentry Major at RCTC. Recipients must be accepted as a full-time student, maintain a 2.0 GPA with a minimum of 12 credits per quarter, and show financial need.

Applications must be postmarked on or before May 1, 1997

Applications will include the following:
  1. Completed application form
  2. Copy of student's letter of acceptance by RCTC
  3. Transcripts of all previous educational experience (high school, GED, college)
  4. Copy of Student Aid Report (from Financial Aid Office at RCTC)
  5. Personal Statement (see additional application form)

Society of Manufacturing Engineer Scholarship

2 Scholarships

Amount: $250
Awarded to one student entering Mechanical Drafting and one student entering Machine Tool Trades.


Scholarships for Incoming/Returning Students

People's Cooperative Power Association Scholarship

1 Scholarship to Incoming or Returning Student

Amount: $600
Awarded to student whose family is a customer of People's Cooperative Power Association. Preference given to student in study of agriculture or related field and who is planning to continue at four year college or university.


Hoffman Scholarship

1 Scholarship to Incoming or Returning Student

Amount: $250
Awarded to a student who plans to attend a four-year college or university following completion of course work at RCTC, with the intent of earning a degree in one of the "hard" sciences, (i.e. engineering, medicine, surveying). Recipients are also selected based on financial need.


American Business Women's Association
(Rochester Chapter)

3 Scholarships to Incoming or Returning Students

Amount: $500

A scholarship to a female student in each of three categories:
  1. Recipient enrolled in a technical school/college
  2. Recipient enrolled in a community college, college, or university
  3. A non-traditional student enrolled in any higher education institution
Scholarships are limited to women. Should have maintained a GPA of 2.5 or better during last academic year. Recipients selection based on combination of GPA, reference letters, and biographical statement. Members of the Rochester Chapter of ABWA and individuals related to a member are not eligible. Recipient may reapply for another scholarship for subsequent academic years.

Apply directed to ABWA - Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 1, 1997

Applications will include the following:
  1. Completed application form
    (Form available at RCTC Foundation Office, University Center Rochester, CF105)
  2. Copy of school transcript or report cards for last academic year
  3. Three character reference letters

National Association of Women in Construction Scholarship

Amount: $500
Awarded to a female student enrolling in a construction-related training program at RCTC.
Applicants must complete the National Assoc. of Women in Construction's application form. (Available in the RCTC Foundation Office, CF105.)

Izaak Walton League, Rochester Chapter Scholarship

1 or more Scholarships

Amount: Variable
Awarded to qualified students enrolled in Pre-Forestry or a course of study leading to: soil conservation, game and fish management, forestry, park service, soil service, conservation education, water management, or other related aspect of conservation. NOTE: Essay required.


Gould Memorial Scholarship

2 Scholarships

Amount: $1000
Awarded to a custodial single parent, any major, preference to accounting.


Green Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a non-traditional student, any major.


Saint Mary's Hospital Scholarship

Amount: $750
Awarded to students enrolled in RCTC's Associate Degree Nursing Program who have completed Nursing 117. Recipients must agree to work one year at Saint Mary's Hospital.


Zumbro Valley Medical Society/Alliance Scholarship

Amount: $700
Awarded to an RCTC Nursing student from Minnesota.


Marge Allen Memorial Scholarship

1 Scholarship

Amount: $600
Awarded to a student continuing studies at RCTC or another affiliated educational institution, who is an Olmsted County resident with financial need. Preference to students whose educational goals help them break away from dependence on public assistance programs.


Rochester Commercial Banks Scholarship

Awarded to students enrolled in finance whose permanent address is Rochester.


Hill Memorial Scholarship

Award given to a student majoring in elementary education or business.


Kenneth McGhie Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to international, minority, or refugee students at RCTC.

Awarded to full or part-time student interested in pursuing art as a career choice.


RCTC Child Care Scholarship

Amount: $200
Awarded to a student who will have a child enrolled at the RCTC on-site child care center for at least three months between July 1, 1997 - June 30, 1998.


Rick S. Stelling Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $200
Awarded to a student who graduated from a southeastern Minnesota High School who has a strong interest in the field of music, and has been a participant/performing member of the RCTC Music Program.

RCTC Students

Douglass Family Scholarship

15 Scholarships

Amount: $3000
Awarded to graduates of RCTC having completed a minimum of 75 of their collegiate level credits through RCTC, or who have completed 90 or more collegiate level credits of which 75 credits are received through RCTC. A minimum of 3.3 GPA is required. Finalists will be asked to submit a 200 word essay describing their collegiate and career goals. This scholarship is renewable for a second year.


Rochester Area Alimni and Friends of the University of Minnesota (RAAFUM) Scholarship

Please use specialized application form.
Application deadline: February 14, 1997. RAAFUM makes final selection.

Amount: $1500
Awarded to a student who is graduating from RCTC and transferring to one of the Twin Cities campuses of the University of Minnesota.


Mayo Foundation Scholarship

1 Scholarship

Amount: $1250
Awarded to a sophomore who has attended RCTC for two or more years and is graduating in a professional program with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The student must be interested in pursuing a career in medicine. This scholarship is renewable for a second year.


Minnesota Community College Transfer Scholarship

For Bemidji State University
All Qualified Applicants

Amount: $600 or $750
Awarded to all students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above who will complete the Associate in Arts Degree prior to beginning classes at Bemidji State University, and who submit the application for admission by April 1, 1997, will receive a Transfer Student Scholarship in the amount of $600. Any student who completes the A.A. Degree, has applied by the date noted above and has a 4.00 GPA will receive a $750 scholarship.
No special application is needed, just complete the transfer student application for admission, submit the $20 application fee and an official transcript of credits earned from the community college(s).
