Great choice! The student typically studies German language (composition, conversation), literature (by periods, author, or special topic such as German Short Story or The German Press) and German Civilization and Culture. Some typical applications of foreign language studies are a B.A. major in German or International Studies, a B.A. minor in German, a B.S. major in German (Teaching) or International Business, B.S. minor in German (Teaching), Linguistics, International Studies, or a combination of a German major or minor with another major.
Students of German often spend time studying in Germany, Switzerland, or Austria.
An encouraging word!
Many universities offer retroactive credit at a nominal fee upon completion of an upper-level course with a grade of A or B. It is therefore to the advantage of the RCTC student with previous foreign language experience to continue studying that same language and to enter the sequence at RCTC at as high a level as possible, so as to complete the entire 4-semester lower division sequence before transfer.
Students transferring to the University of Minnesota may be interested in their FLIP and FLAC, Foreign Language Immersion and Across the Curriculum certificate programs.
