Course Description

This course is designed to develop reading and vocabulary skills of second language learners so that they can succeed in mainstream academic courses. Emphasis will be given to reading comprehension, understanding grammatical and vocabulary clues, increasing college textbook vocabulary, taking notes from articles, and practicing test taking skills.

• using skimming and scanning techniques

• finding support for main ideas in readings

• answering different kinds of reading questions

• writing outlines

• identifying patterns of information

• using charts, forms and graphs to extract information

• learning meanings of words from context
