Course Description

This course is designed to develop the academic listening and speaking skills of ESL students. Emphasis will be placed on listening to lectures, note taking, speaking in academic situations, and practicing pronunciation skills.

Course Content

LISTENING

SPEAKING

• identify vocabulary meanings from listening contexts

• list information heard in dialogs and lectures

• identify the main idea and the support of a lecture

• make inferences from information not stated

• write summaries and outlines of information from lectures

• complete charts and graphs using information from lectures

• use symbols and abbreviations for note-taking

• write brief outlines of information from lectures

• write answers to oral questions

 

• use new vocabulary in speaking situations, using correct grammatical and context forms

• answer questions orally using correct verbs and forms

• present factual information using sequence form and vocabulary

• present factual information using past tense form

• present factual information using cause/effect form and vocabulary

• express opinions using vocabulary of opinion

• use interjections in context

• use appropriate phrases to ask for clarification

• ask for directions

• give directions using new vocabulary

 • recognize stress, intonation, and pronunciation to be practiced
