Course Description

Writing and Grammar I for ESL is designed to review the basic elements of
English grammar including sentence structure, verb forms and agreement, tenses,
modifiers, nouns and pronouns, articles, prepositions, punctuation, and
capitalization. It will also introduce students to basic writing contexts and writing
forms, including sentences, memos, and basic paragraphs.

• recognize sentence word order patterns

• write complete sentences, including      negative statements and questions

• use past, present and future tenses in appropriate contexts

• use appropriate past, present, and future verb forms

• use modal auxiliaries with appropriate form and function

• identify the difference between plural, singular, count and noncount nouns

• use articles and determiners

• use adjectives and adverbs

• recognize and use basic  punctuation and capitalization

• use conditionals

• recognize words using gerunds and use gerunds in sentences

• recognize words using infinitives and use infinitives in sentences

• write simple paragraphs and e-mail messages of opinion and fact using the present tense

• write simple paragraphs and e-mail messages about past events

• write simple paragraphs and e-mail messages about future possible events

 • write answers to questions in the present, past and future
