Jason Pearson has been creating a cache of imagery, performance work, sculpture, and site-specific installations for the past ten years. He constructs a visual language of memories, notes, and proclamations that collectively provide an idiosyncratic glimpse into his history and experiences. The collective body of work acts as a set of codes and signifiers of imagined events, games, and desires. He has an eye for the visually strange, humorous, contradictory, and this is the overarching characteristic of the exhibition, Desire for Magic. There are images of him re-enacting childhood memories, sometimes composed with reference to the conventions of family photographs. Other works are documents of scenarios that he and his collaborators stage, using masks and other graphic props that confuse the two- and three- dimensional spaces, encouraging the viewer to try to imagine what is taking place in these psychologically charged scenes. There are also collages within the archive that use popular culture imagery collaged and re-worked with quasi-adolescent Photoshop embellishment, often conveying a sense of erotic and unrequited desire. Collectively, these different image-types and sculptures create a subjective but real and tangible sense of Pearson’s complex relationship with the external world.

Jason Pearson holds a BFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design and MFA from Syracuse University, both in photography. Pearson has exhibited his photography and drawing both nationally and internationally. And is the recipient of a number of grants and residencies including Arteles Creative Residency Program, Haukijarvi, Finland, (2015); McKnight Photography Fellowship (2012-13); Jerome Foundation Travel and Research Grant (2011); Djerassi Resident Artist Program (2008); The Cooper Union School of Art Summer Residency (2007); and Anderson Ranch Arts Center Residency (2007-08). His work is in a number of private and public collections including the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, Illinois; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Leslie-Lohan Museum, New York, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; and Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Boston, MA to name a few. In 2013 Pearson published his first limited edition monograph, No Kissing through Location Books, Minneapolis, MN. He is currently Curator of Education at Rochester Art Center and instructor of art at Rochester Community & Technical College, both in Rochester, MN.
