COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an introductory survey of the art of the ancient world. We will examine the architecture, sculpture and painting of many important periods and civilizations of the past, including: pre-historic art, the art of Egypt and the ancient Near East, Aegean Art, Greek Art, Roman Art, Early Christian Art, Islamic Art, Byzantine art, Romanesque Art and Gothic Art.
COURSE PREREQUISITES
No prerequisite courses necessary.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Beyond merely learning to recognize a great many works of art from diverse times and places, students will develop an understanding of some of the cultural and historical conditions that helped shape these works. Students will also learn to better understand and appreciate the great beauty and diversity of the visual arts.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance is required. More than four unexcused absences will result in a loss of points. The last day to withdraw with a "W" is November 21st.

Information regarding Small Group Presentations, Connections Folders and Papers will be distributed at a later date.
Quizzes and Exams
A variety of testing methods will be used. Some questions will call for short answers (such as Compare/Contrast); others will require longer essays. About half the points on quizzes and exams will be comprised of slide identifications. No make-up tests will be given without prior arrangement (unless due to illness).
A note about Plagiarism:
Words or ideas in your papers that come from a particular source must be credited to that source. Failure to cite sources for words or ideas which are not your own is considered plagiarism. I will randomly check bibliography sources. Clear violations of academic honesty (plagiarism and/or cheating) will result in failure of the course.
GRADING POLICY
90% -100% = A 80% -89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
