Getlein, Mark: Gilbert’s Living With Art, Sixth Edition (required)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an introductory exposure to art and to ideas about art and its creation. We will discuss general ideas about the nature and uses of art, review the visual elements and principles of design, explore common media and techniques, and briefly look at a history of the major developments in the visual arts. On April 22nd OR 23rd (you can choose which date works best for you) we will take a trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA).

COURSE PREREQUISITES

No prerequisite courses necessary.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will be introduced to works of art and will begin to develop an understanding and appreciation of the visual arts. We will explore the context and purposes of art, learn some related vocabulary, and examine basic elements and techniques. Students will begin to learn to make meaning of visual works of art.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance is required. More than two unexcused absences will result in a loss of points (10 points per every additional unexcused absence).  The last day to withdraw with a “W” is April 16th.

Museum Papers, 2 @ 100 pts. each 200 points
Connections Folder 50 points
Collage 50 points
Final Exam 100 points

550 points

Further information regarding Small Group Presentations, Collage Project, Museum Papers, the Museum Visit, and Connections Folders will be distributed at a later date. Assignments will also be posted on the website listed above.

EXAMS

A variety of testing methods will be used. Some questions will call for Contrast/Comparison of slides; others will require longer essays. Both exams will include slide identifications. No make-up tests will be given without prior arrangement (unless due to emergency).

GRADING POLICY
90% -100% = A
80% -89%

= B
70% - 79%

= C
60% - 69%

= D
59% and below = NC

Words or ideas in your papers that come from a particular source must be credited to that source.  The failure to cite sources for words or ideas which are not your own is considered plagiarism.  Clear violations of academic honesty (plagiarism and/or cheating) will result in failure of the course.
